Hi Mario,  I too have recently rebuilt a steamboat pump.  The eccentric
followers were so badly worn that I made new ones on my lathe out of
Delrin (a type of plasticy nylon, very hard wearing).  They will never
wear out, so will never need any further attention.  Of course, they're
not original, but they're silent in operation.
