Hand-Played Play-Rite Rolls
By Bob and Sonja Lemon

On June 26, 1977, the Founding Chapter of Amica took a field trip to
Play-Rite Inc. in Turlock and toured the new facilities. During the
tour Tom Hawthorn sat at the recording piano and played the love song
from Romeo and Juliet. We then followed the recorded tape to the
perforating room and watched the perforator do its thing. Those
present received copies of these rolls autographed by Elwood Hansen,
Lynnea Hansen, and Tom.

In March, 1979, we decided to be a dealer for Play-Rite 88-note rolls
and placed an order to this effect. A short time later, we decided to
donate some rolls to the local PBS radio station auction. I called
Play-Rite and talked to Elwood Hansen regarding how soon our order
could be shipped. At that time Elwood stated that shipping had not yet
started on any 88-note rolls. He then offered to personally fly our
order to our local airport the next day. I believe we were the first
dealers to receive a shipment of the 88-note rolls.
