Should a Restoration Look Like New?
By David Evans

Frank Metzger, you are a prince among restorers! Would that they
all subscribed to your code of ethics! You write:

> What about documentation of everything that was done? If a screw
> was replaced by a new screw made to look exactly as the old one
> must this be noted? Must the screw be so marked?

Well, museum restorers of historically important items do exactly
that (I'm thinking of things like the Wells Cathedral clock here in
UK) -- not that I consider it necessary in the majority of cases
to be that pedantic!

> The motto to follow, I think, is: Whenever possible, do as little
> as necessary to restore to original functioning and original
> appearance plus normal aging. Most of the time, "Less is more!"

I couldn't have put it better myself!
