John Smith Busker Organ
By Jim Quashnock

Peter, John Smith in England makes a 20-note busker organ. It is
available as simply plans (cost of 43 UK pounds), or a little more
complete kit with building materials.

I am presently working on one. His plans and the accompanying video
cover construction using easy-to-work-with material like balsa wood
for the pipes, insulation foam, and the like. Most everything is cut
"free hand".

Having worked with wood for years, I have opted to use a table saw,
eastern pine for the pipes, maple for the tracker bar, and Baltic
plywood for the box and bellows construction. Also leather for all
gaskets and pipe tops. This leads to a little more sturdy instrument.

John Smith does subscribe to MMD and he may reply directly to you. The
last address I had for him was <johnsmithbusker@supanet.com>. You can
also contact Peter Hood at <info@rollcutter.com>. John sells his plans
through Peter. A group in Australia sells a version of this 20-note
organ in complete kit form under the name Castlewood. Try contacting
Tom Newsome at <newsome@wn.com.au>.

Music rolls are readily available. Ed Gaida in USA sells both punched
and unpunched rolls, including Melvyn Wright arrangements. Seems he
recently changed his e-mail address. Try web site: www.txdirect.net/~egaida
