Mechanical Music in the Movies: "The Great Race"
By Brian Smith

I can't say enough about the new DVD release of "The Great Race".
The quality is excellent and the extra behind-the-scenes film is
fascinating.

Does anybody know what the coin piano is in the barroom scene?
It's in the saloon in the town of 'Boracho', just below the staircase.
It looks like an early Seeburg style A; actually, the case looks like
a style B with a style A upper panel. It also looks to be painted
a reddish color.

Of course the other automatic instrument in the movie is Fate's player
pipe organ which sounds like an Aeolian with a Wurlitzer console.

I love this movie and the music by Mancini is excellent complete with
mandolin attachment!

Cheers,
