I found the comment by John A. Tuttle about Rachmaninoff and
high-fidelity rather interesting.

The few professional or semi-pro musicians I've known have been far
less concerned about the fidelity of musical recordings than have
the rest of the audio customers I dealt with through the years.
That's just my experience, and no generalizations can thus be drawn.
(I did consumer-audio repair for 20 or so years.)

But if I were to hazard a generalization, I would think it has to do
with the fact that a real musician (which I most definitely am not)
can look at a score and hear the music in his head, or listen to
a recording and visualize the score.

As for myself, I rather like MIDI renditions of music I otherwise
wouldn't hear much, and I once found myself listening raptly to
a solenoid piano set up in the lobby of a fancy Chicago hotel.  The
music was quite moving.  Perhaps that shows a hopeless lack of
sophistication.
