MAPSA = MAP S.A. of Switzerland
By Peter Leutwiler

Hello Victoria, I think "Die Forelle" means the name of the music,
maybe by Schubert. The meaning of MAPSA is MAP S.A., it is the name
of the company that produces these boxes.

I could not found MAP SA in the Internet; the only thing found was
a short description of the company:

http://databank.swissfirms.ch/en_visualisation_societe_2.asp?ENOFI=02500246&RECHERCHE=2

There was a text in MMD by Hauke Marxsen some years ago [below].

Greetings from Switzerland

  Subject: MAPSA (Switzerland) Cylinder Movements

Dear people interested in cylinder movements for musical boxes!

In the MMDigest from 7 June 2000 I told you about the Swiss company
MAP S.A. (MAPSA). I have seen, now and then, movements by that small
company. During my last visit in Ruedesheim I accidentally heard
that this company is producing musical box movements with melodies
a customer wishes.

In the MMDigest archive I could find only one reference about
MAPSA, that was an article in the MMDigest 991120 from Joerg Wendel,
"Source of New Music Box Movements".

I phoned with MAPSA. They do not have Internet connection up to now,
but they will have it soon. I spoke with Mister Jacques Uster, the
director, and asked him for information: leaflets, tune lists, and so
on. Meanwhile, I got a big envelope with a catalog and tune lists.
It's all in French.

They are producing 12-, 18-, 22- and 28- and 36-note cylinder
movements. The tune list for the 18-note movement has more than 900
different melodies! I didn't ask for the prices of their mass produced
movements, but I asked about the specially designed ones.

For an 18-note movement with a melody which a customer wants, they
require 250 Swiss francs, plus 15 Swiss francs per movement if it's
a small edition, or between 10 and 15 Swiss francs if it's a bigger
quantity.

The address:

  MAP S.A.
  Champs-Lovats 30
  1400 Yverdon-Les-Bains
  Switzerland
  Phone: Switzerland (024) 425 66 36
  Fax: Switzerland (024) 425 72 22

Because of the circumstance that they do not have Internet connection,
send your questions to my e-mail address. I will collect them and send
that package of questions to Mister Uster (via Fax). It's the easiest
way for you and for MAPSA.

Kind regards from Hauke Marxsen, Germany
