The best recommendation I can give for steam engine enthusiasts is
a Usenet group: rec.crafts.metalworking.  It is _exceedingly_ busy
-- often 100 posts per day -- but the people are amazingly knowledgeable
and helpful, though the conversation can range from the political to
the silly at times.  There's a FAQ and an archive for the group as
well.

Some of the group's parishioners have built live-steam model
locomotives, and at least one fellow builds steamboats.

I dare say that some subscribers to r.c.m. are also involved in
music boxes, horology, and other activities of interest to MMD.
