Hupfeld Music Roll Has Center Sprocket Holes
By Christian Greinacher

In 030116 MMDigest Philip Jamison was asking about a "mystery roll",
and meanwhile some answers were given, pointing in the correct
direction. Assisted by a friend of mine we now found an answer in the
literature which definitely proves that the rolls belong to the Hupfeld
playing mechanism.

The recently published book by Siegfried Wendel, "Data Storage Musical
Instruments", shows on page 88 the "Mechanical Harmonium, approx. 1895,
Hupfeld, Leipzig". The pictures show the rolls made of Manila paper
with the centered drive holes and exactly the same label as on the
picture provided by Phil.

With this information it is easy to identify the "mystery roll" also in
two pictures shown in the Bowers Encyclopedia on page 362 (bottom left
and top right).
