Thorens Disc Musical Box Repair
By Matthew Caulfield

The MBSI gets a fair number of questions about repairing Thorens disc
boxes whose plastic gears have failed. According to MBSI's Ralph
Heintz, Thorens made a big mistake in switching from metal to plastic
gears, which are stressed so much in being force-fitted onto their
axles that they eventually split. He opines that the Thorens movement
is no great marvel of engineering to begin with and recommends that
owners of Thorens disc boxes consider replacing the whole movement with
one made by Reuge.

Reuge took over some of Thorens' designs with the result that the disc
movements made by Reuge fits exactly, down to the mounting holes, the
Thorens boxes. According to Ralph, your Thorens discs will still play
on the Reuge movement. For further information on this, in which I am
not an expert, I refer you to Ralph <rheintz@pacbell.net.geentroep>.

If only the gear were needed, I believe Nancy Fratti
<musicbox@dreamscape.com.geentroep> stocks (or did stock) them. But
broken teeth are apparently involved in George Watson's Thorens.
