Band Organ Rolls & Band Organ Condition
By Alan Erb

An observation: Some time ago I purchased a Style 153 Wurlitzer band
organ, which seemed to play quite nicely, or so I thought at the time.
I had a "great" roll which I couldn't wait to hear on the organ. I
installed the roll and ... what a disappointment! It did not sound
great, good, or even tolerable.

It turns out that original music plays a lot of the organ a lot of the
time. This means that the melody picks up a missing trumpet or two, or
mitigates the blood curdling nasal trumpet, or a trumpet covers an
overblowing or out of tune flute, etc. Many of the really good rolls
out there solo a good bit on certain ranks (including trumpet), and
when there is a weakness in the organ it really jumps out at you!

Oh, the organ? It required everything, starting from scratch. The
music roll _is_ great!
