John F. Morse Study on Music Roll Perforators
By Julian Dyer

The Morse report gives patent number 1,085,989 for the Duo-Art
perforators. Looking this number up on the US Patent Office web site
(www.uspto.gov) shows that it's not right -- this patent is for a
"Signalling Device" by SL Martin and WA Smith! It was granted on the
same day (February 3rd, 1914), so the real number must be fairly close.

I tried a few combinations of the number in case it was ordinary finger
trouble, but didn't come up with the DeKleist and McCormick perforator.
I also tried some searches by class number that often locate patents on
a particular thread, but couldn't find anything.

So, a challenge: Can anyone locate the real patent number? A really
impressive challenge would be a list of all the patents covering
mechanical music with a brief summary of each!
