MIDI Files vs. Music Rolls
By Stephen Simpson

It strikes me that the emphasis [of roll scanning] is more towards the
MIDI-fication of mechanical music sooner than get down to the roots of
what the hobby is all about.

Whilst I applaud the saving of rolls on MIDI to prevent their loss,
surely then the process should be taken full circle and the rolls then
re-cut to make them available to those who want them once again.

It is easy to install MIDI into organs, pianos and orchestrions because
rolls and book music are wearing out, but preservation of mechanical
music should include the original playing medium and not use modern
alternatives just because MIDI is cheap and rolls and books are
expensive.

Let's get back to basics and give the roll and book music providers
a living once again, and encourage their work.

Sincerely
Stephen Simpson
