Do calliopes have to be "too loud"?

My wife and I commissioned Dave Miner, of Miner Manufacturing Co.,
to build us his first-ever 58-whistle Tangley Calliaphone.  Since
we wanted a more mellow, quiet sound, we also asked Dave to put
a "hood" on the calliope.  This was made of Lexan, a clear plastic.
There is also a top on the hood and Dave had a good idea to add swell
shutters up there.

The end result is that we have a calliope with "volume control."
With everything closed up you can stand next to the calliope and hear
yourself think as well as listen to the music.  With the shutters open,
you appeal to a more far-reaching audience.  We have not tried taking
the hood off, nor are we likely to.
