Sealing Leather

I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that the leather in question
was used by the gentleman in a vacuum pump of a reproducing piano,
presumably the bellows.   I would not think leather, no matter how
sealed, would be tough enough for the job, and wonder what other people
think.
