Printing Music Manuscript from MIDI Files
By John J. Breen

In MMD 030930, Bob Conant asked for possible programs for transcribing
MIDI files into print music scores. While it is expensive, a very good
program for this is "Finale". I believe that all the versions of this
program will do what Bob has requested, but I know that the most recent
one, "Finale 2004", will definitely work and does so almost
effortlessly.

One problem that can creep into the translation is when the program
attempts to determine what the tempo is and how to quantize that into
printed notes. If it chooses wrong, you can end up with some odd
notations, which will be technically correct but virtually impossible
for a human organist to play. I have not used it enough when this
situation has arisen to determine how to adjust it. There are a lot of
menu items on the translator that can be set, which I am sure will take
care of this.
