Piano Roll Artist Eubie Blake
By Deane Wiley

In 1970 , I was fortunate enough to entice Eubie out of New York
to perform at a jazz festival we were putting on at Southern Illinois
University, Edwardsville (just across the river from St. Louis).

Eubie performed at various times during the three day festival, and
even though we had some jazz headliners from around the nation, Eubie
was the hit of the festival. I have 7-inch reel tapes of the festival
including all of the sessions at which he performed.

One interesting note: when I asked him to fly out to St. Louis and,
of course, to bring his wife, I got a telegram from him saying simply,
"Eubie by plane, Marilyn by train...," and that's the way it was.
