Preventing Damage to Piano Rolls
By Frank Adams

Over the years I have found the best method that can be used to stop
tearing original rolls is to pull off the left end flange and on the
protruding part apply a little scotch tape. Try a little wrapped
around the protruding part. If it is not enough to make the flange
tight then apply a little more tape. Now pull out the left end flange
a little bit. This leaves some room for the roll to turn without
tearing it.

In regards to my previous message [031107 MMDigest]. When comparing
original rolls with a recut version you will normally find that the
recut is either a little longer or shorter. Another major point: one
manufacturer of recut rolls of the past is known to have purposefully
shortened a roll because it was too large for the end flanges. Not
a nice thing to do.
