Source of Rosewood in UK
By Nicholas Simons

Re: Beater Balls for Seeburg Xylophone

Rosewood can be obtained from John Boddy's Fine Wood and Tool Store
in Boroughbridge, Noth Yorkshire, YO5 9LJ, Great Britain. Telephone
01423 322370. Sorry, but I don't have the Email address.

They stock over 200 different species of timber and deal by mail order.
In a recent catalogue they list the following rosewoods;

  Amazon, Burmese, Honduras, Genuine Indian, Mexican, Scented
  Australian, Sisso, Santos, Indonesian and Thai.

Most is not available in boards but most is available in squares which
is suitable for ball turning. Larger blanks are also available for
bowl turning in most.

7/8-inch wooden balls can be easily turned up on a home lathe without
the use of special tooling and this is the cheapest way of doing it
if you only have a few to make, say, up to one xylophone's set. It
shouldn't take more than about 15 minutes per ball using normal hand
held wood turning tools ( this is from personal experience ).

Best of luck with your balls, Nicholas Simons.
