Merry-Go-Round and Carousel Rotation
By William Griswold Jr.

The reason that the English gallopers (roundabout) goes clockwise
is because of the equestrian sport. It is "proper" for the riders
to mount their horses from the left, which would be the outside on
the gallopers rides facing clockwise. Bob Moore is correct with the
reasoning behind the rotation of American carousels (merry-go-rounds).
