'Deal' Softwood
By Keith Reedman

Dear MMDers, It was interesting to read the outcome of Craig Smith's
quest for suitable wood for his English barrel-organ [040411 MMDigest].

Never having heard of sugar pine, and curious to know the botanical
name of the timber which was finally selected, I looked it up (Google)
and found it to be pinus lambertiana. Apparently a native of California
and Oregon, it grows to a large size and furnishes a 'soft and easily
worked timber'. The stumps exude a sweet resin, once used as a sugar
substitute.
