Cardboard Spool Causes Paper Deterioration
By Bruce Grimes

I've been buying recuts since Larry Givens began cutting. We all know
that Larry's "cut-rite rolls" crinkle. Now I notice some of the Powell
[Klavier] rolls are crinkling near the end. Also I hear it in some
Play-Rite and Keystone rolls. There are lines in the paper that line
up with the spiral pattern in the core.

I just ran across a roll in which the last long chord slurs because the
wrinkle lines are so pronounced they let air through; much like the
sound of an old warped roll. I have a friend who had old organ rolls
that mostly didn't have endings because of similar deterioration.

My house is temperature and humidity controlled.
