Post-Production Editing On Ampico Roll
By Bruce Clark

Randolph Herr's taped Ampico roll sounds very much to me, like an
Ampico "sub super" (as Ampico called them), which is an Ampico editor's
copy. The roll shows all the work the editor made with narrow strips
of paper pasted to the roll's perforations. Once corrections were
completed to the editor's satisfaction, the roll was used to make a
3-to-1 master for production. Often these rolls were given to employees
or the editors for home use, since they played perfectly, but they showed
all the editor's changes and corrections and so were not supposed to be
sold to the public.

Does the roll have bits of tape on the expression perforations, and
blue pencil marks here and there? If it does, it is definitely a sub
super and an example of the Ampico editor's work. At one time I had
two or three of these rolls given to me by a former employee of the
American Piano Co.
