An easy method to repair stripped screw holes that I have used for
several years with good success is to apply "Super Glue" to the
stripped holes.  The glue penetrates and hardens the wood threads.
It is necessary to use a thin wire or toothpick to wick the glue down
into the hole.  Don't overfill the hole, just enough to let the glue
penetrate the wood.

Of course, let the glue set and dry before inserting the screws.
I have found this method repairs almost all the stripped holes I have
encountered.  As a standard practice, I apply the glue to all screw
holes before assembly, which goes a long way in preventing stripped
holes, especially in the softer woods such as poplar.

I learned this "trick" from a modeler friend and he tells me they use
this method with balsa wood to apply miniature screws and to harden
balsa wood for other applications.  "Super Glue" can be purchased at
model shops in three and four ounce bottles, with various degrees of
setup time.
