Dave Clark was right, I think, that the four notes of his chime
mechanism were the E-D-C-G of the Westminster chimes.  In fact, if you
take the notes in the order that he listed: 1  2  3  4  2  2&1  2  4  3
and move the last 3 notes to the beginning, and let 1=G (lowest note),
2=C, 3=D and 4=E, then you have

  2  4  3  1  2  3  4  2  2&1, or
  C  E  D  G  C  D  E  C  G&C

which is the first 8 notes of the Westminster melody, plus a strike
(for the hour?) at the end.
