Charlie,  "Best Test" cement and "Best Line Thinner" are the ticket.
We have just called it "Best's" in the shop for so long that I forgot
that there was more to the brand name.

Back in the 'sixties I worked for an organ firm that was started in
1914.  From day one they sized their leather pouches with "Best Test."

I had the opportunity to releather an organ of theirs from 1919.
The leather was delaminating and failing.  The rubber cement on the hair
side of what amounted to a "natural split" was still in reasonable
condition.

Any good art supply store will carry it.  Failing that, the "University
Store" of a college that has an art major will also probably carry it.
