Mechanical Music in Cartoons
By Mark Kinsler

There seem to be a lot of cartoons with player pianos and organ
grinders. That is because they are inherently funny.

Bugs Bunny was an organ grinder near what looked like Central Park
West, where his monkey would scramble up to windowsills to collect
coins from apartment dwellers. (Through the usual series of odd
incidents, a gorilla took over the monkey's job.)

My all-time favorite was what I believe was a Disney cartoon having to
do with photography. The amateur photographer threads the film through
the spools in his Brownie, closes the camera, and starts to crank.
And crank.

And crank some more, all the while watching for the numeral '1' to
appear in the little red window. Among the varied items that go past
are the words and punchings of a piano roll. I believe that the song
was 'Mother Macree.' I was maybe ten years old when this appeared on
"Disneyland" or one of the other Disney TV shows, and I didn't recover
for days.
