Internet Auction Bidding War
By Charlie Morgan

Rob Case's latest posting on Internet Auction Bidding War is not
exactly correct. Regarding snipe programs for eBay auctions he stated,
"The computer at 'Snipe doesn't send you a note that asks, 'Are you
really sure you want me to bid that much?' It just does it, and the
result is exactly what happened."

When you tell a snipping program to bid you also tell it what your
maximum bid should be. It does not just keep bidding until you win.
It stops at the price you tell it. So, the person that won the recent
over-inflated auction on eBay knew what they were doing and told the
computer how much to bid. Computers are just machines that do what we
tell them. They are not these magical things that think on their own
(at least not yet).
