Possible Musical Box Auction Scam
By Terry Smythe

Alan Fox says:

>> Mike Moran is correct with his suspicion of the current
>> upright Regina eBay listing as being a scam. I have been in
>> contact with several people who remember viewing the original
>> (legitimate) ad posted by a prominent music box dealer and now
>> a scammer has copied that dealer's original text and pictures
>> as representing his own machine for sale.

Both ads can still be seen on eBay. The original ad posted
by Al Meekins is eBay #7309179109 :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7309179109
Offered at US $9,600.00 (Reserve not met)
  Vendor - meekinsmusicboxes ( 28 )

Note the proven history...

The same music box, with one picture only, extracted from
Al's original posting, is eBay # 7310459824 :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7310459824
Offered at: GBP 1,500.00 (Approximately US $2,804.48)
  Alleged vendor - thomashalton99 ( 0 ) in UK

Note zero history and huge discrepancy in offering price.

It is interesting to note that the original offering by Al Meekins
appears to have not sold, reinforcing the perception that the more
current one really is a scam.

Is there a way to bring this to the attention of the eBay cops?
And if so, will anything be done?

[ Peter Neilson also writes, "The stolen picture has a curious
[ device or squiggle appearing to sit on the carpet in the lower
[ right-hand corner. It does not appear in Meekins' original."
