Identifying Welte-Mignon Reproducing Rolls
By Eric Shoemaker

Hello all; Bruce can check his DeLuxe rolls the following way to
positively identify them as "Welte (Licensee)" format. There should be
four very short staggered perfs on both left and right margins before
any other perforations appear.

Welte Licensee's used a lock-and-cancel system. For instance, a short
blip would pass by to activate the sustain pedal and it would remain
engaged until another short blip passes over the tracker bar to cancel
it. The margin perforations are all cancels. In case of wrinkled
leaders, sloppy roll loading, or whatever inadvertently turned
something on, these perfs reset the "brains" to "everything off" until
the actual introductory notes of the piece commence. Incidentally,
because of this lock-and-cancel system the tempo indicator _must_ be
accurate or the entire performance will be lousy if not downright
awful.
