When I had my pedal Grunert Hupfeld upright restored by Reg. Richings
in London, I too noticed the keys did not move up and down when
pedalling a roll.  I had got used to watching the keys go up and down
when my Rogers Ampico was playing, and although not all players do this
I rather missed it, and felt something was lacking when listening and
watching the performance when pedalling the Grunert.

Reg. contacted one of his engineering friends and a piece of metal was
made for each key.  This was glued on the back of each of the keys,
well out of sight, inside the piano.  These weights can be removed at
a later date if required.  I'm not sure how much these weights weigh,
but was told at the time it was important.

There are disadvantages to this, I'm told.  Firstly, the piano keys feel
lighter to hand-play, but as I'm not a pianist this doesn't bother me.
Secondly, my expert pianolist friends tell me the keys now, with these
weights glued on, do not allow the keys to go down fast enough.
Fortunately they put the key-lock on, a lever easily accessible under
the keyboard, so everybody's happy!
