Crank Wheel for Barrel Organ
By Craig Smith

Hi, I recently came across a neat solution for putting a crank wheel
on a barrel or other similar organ. I know that several people have
had a wheel cast, sometimes out of aluminum, but a cast-iron wheel
has the right look and it is heavy enough to provide a little inertial
smoothing of the cranking motion.

While making some upgrades to my table saw, I noticed several hand
cranks in the Grizzly tool catalog. They come in sizes up to 10 inches
diameter and they are really nice looking -- and heavy. The large ones
are over 10 pounds. You do have to drill out the center hole to the
required diameter and also mount the handle, which you buy separately.
(Note that the 4" handle should be used.) I'll send a couple pictures
for the Archives.

Regards,
Craig Smith
