Pirating Music Rolls
By Mark Kinsler

Whoops. I didn't mean to start a discussion about present-day
duplication of music rolls; I'm sure that everyone here is respectful
of the rights of others as well as the duties of the archivist.

What I was asking about <pause> was whether people pirated rolls in,
like, the 1910's or 1920's, back when player pianos were as popular as
CD players are now. I mean, were there kids with duplicating punches
hidden in their bedrooms, or basement boiler rooms filled with
immigrant musicians, or anything like that?

I have visions of a guy wearing a big overcoat, on a street corner
in New York City in 1922, pulling out a clandestine copy of 'Buffalo
Gals'. I thought about this in Thessalonika this summer when I saw the
Greek police chasing Nigerian guys who were selling counterfeit CDs.
