I'm only a mechanical engineer and have not been able to figure out
a way to directly read and/or edit MIDI files.

Are there any inexpensive programs that allow you to do bulk
replacement of MIDI messages in files, such as remove all references
to note number nn, or program changes?  Such a program could make it
easier to transform files for use in punching rolls for small organs.
