How Many Wurlitzer 146 Band Organs Survive?
By Jack M. Conway

Hi Group, It would be difficult if not impossible to say how many
Wurlitzer 146 Band Organs survive. I have one and I have tried to put
together some information about them. Another source to contact would
be C.O.A.A., the Carousel Organ Association of America. Ron Bopp is
the Editor/Publisher of C.O.A.A. Journal. His email address is
<bopp@peoplepc.com.geentrope>.

According to Bowers' Encyclopedia, Style 146 band organs were produced
in the following amounts:

  "Style 146-A: 1916 (13); 1917 (12); 1918 (3); 1919 (20);
1920 (33); 1921 (18); 1922 (18); 1923 (18); 1924 (14); 1925 (8);
1926 (4); 1927 (1); 1928 (1).

  "Style 146-B: 1922 (1); 1923 (2); 1924 (8); 1925 (8); 1926 (8);
1927 (4); 1928 (1); 1929 (6); 1930 (2)."

In 1995 Mike Barnhart, Membership Secretary AMICA, published a
"Collection Listing Supplement to the 1995 Membership Directory."
He went through the directory and listed all of the same instruments
together with the collector's name and state. I know that this listing
is 12 years old but it may give some idea what instruments existed at
that time. It shows (14) 146 and 146-A organs and (6) 146-B organs.

By no means do all owners of 146 organs belong to AMICA. To my
knowledge MBSI has not listed instruments by model. I don't know if
COAA has undertaken a survey of existing organs.

I have found Mike Barnhart's listing very helpful when I have had
questions about my instruments.
