MIDI Files of Music Rolls
By Terry Smythe

What Is An E-roll?

Bob Taylor and Robbie Rhodes have expressed some concerns about MIDI
files and e-roll files. It's a concern that emerges often. In an
attempt to shed a little light on just what is the basic difference
between a MIDI Type 1 file and an e-roll, I've put together a web page
illustrating the basic difference. It may be seen at

This page outlines a few basic considerations, invites a quick look at
Larry Doe's MK4 scanner, then hit "back" to return to the e-rolls page.
At end, it provides for returning to an e-valves page I put together
about a year ago.

This e-roll page, "What Is An E-roll," is also available as a clickable
menu item off my E-valves page:

Hope this helps a little to provoke some discussion about e-rolls and
MIDI files. I do not purport to be an expert on MIDI. Others much more
knowledgeable than I will hopefully join in the discussion.
