This has not really been authentically answered before, but I am
looking for an explanation as to why some rolls wander from side
to side during playing, trying to self-destruct, and others do not.

In my collection there is a small percentage that demonstrates this
trait but I cannot find an explanation why they do it.  It has been
suggested that the core being too long allows the paper to wander,
but having eliminated this has not cured the problem.

I am always careful about making sure the rolls are snug against the
right hand spool flange for storage and playing but it is always the
same ones that do it in the same place.  I have unrolled those rolls
on a long dead flat surface and found no measurable distortion of the
paper; I was expecting the paper to be serpentine or curved but as
far as I can tell it is dead straight.  It has me baffled.
