Promoting Mechanical Music
By Ed Hattrup

I have several times had fifth and sixth grade classes visit my col-
lection. I usually start off by having them all sit on the floor and I
give a small demonstration of how musical instruments started. I use a
wood xylophone bar and demonstrate how it makes sound. Then I play a
small whistle.

I let them place a coin in each instrument, so they can hear and see
how the machines play. I answer all the questions. After I am done, I
ask the teacher to give an assignment to tell what they liked and to
draw a picture of what they enjoyed the most. I have the teacher make
up a book and give it to me. These books are a great treasure.
