Mechanical Music in Movie Theatre Lobby
By Jeff Bridges

Hi all, Merry Christmas. The reason for my letter is that I recently
saw the new movie, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets", at the movie
theatre. Sitting in the middle of the lobby was a new Yamaha Disklavier
player piano. They had it adjusted so the keys were barely moving and
you could just make out the sound.

I asked the manager to turn up the volume; when he did the keys came
alive. And then, suddenly children and young teens were coming to see
where the music was coming from!

Well, far be it from me to stop their excitement at seeing a player
piano. I did my best to explain to them that it was called a player
piano and that many years ago our great grandparents used to have such
machines. I had one teen say to me, "Uh-uh, no way!" I replied,
"Yea way," and went into how they worked back then.

It felt good to explain how a player piano worked. All you could hear
after I explained was, "Wow! That is _so_ cool! That rocks!" So as
the kids went off to see their movie I feel that I have in some way
educated the younger generation on player pianos.

Also, the movie, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets", is wicked awesome
and a must see! They lead you into another sequel at the very end of
the movie.

Happy Holidays everyone!
