Capitol Nickelodeon Rolls of the 1930s
By Ed Gaida

The question has been asked just when the last Capitol nickelodeon roll
was issued and what was its number. An original copy of Capitol A-2443
is up for auction right now. I recut that roll some years back from an
original. There must be more than one copy out there because the roll
on the auction site is not the same one that I used.

Capitol A-2447 has been touted as the last Capitol "A" roll. I don't
know... I just punch 'em. I recut this one in October 2004 from an
original roll. To my ear the songs on this roll are all arranged by
J. Lawrence Cook and I would assume that since Max Kortlander had
bought Capitol he sent the talented folks on N. Kedzie Avenue packing.

The only puzzle is why tune number ten on A-2447 is listed as "Chapel
In the Moonlight" when the copy of A-2447 that I scanned a punched had
"The Continental" in that same position on the roll.

Judge for yourself. The link below will take you to a page on my web
site where you can download and listen to _both_ of the above rolls,
or play them on your solenoid piano. I used flute pipes as the extra
instrument. You folks that can manipulate MIDI files might want to
change that to anything of your liking.

Enjoy the music as much as I enjoyed recutting both of them.
