Ampico A Rewind Problem
By Ron McUne

Greetings, The automatic re-roll function on my Marshall Wendell
Ampico A upright has suddenly stopped working properly. When the
perforation passes over the tracker hole (#8), the lever fails to
kick in and send the roll into rewind. Left unattended, the roll will
continue in a forward direction. I am, however, able to manually move
the lever but there is considerable resistance to slide it over to
begin the re-roll. Once the lever is moved, everything functions
normally until the roll shuts off at the beginning.

When the machine is turned off, the re-roll lever will glide
effortlessly in both directions. That being the case, I am assuming
the problem is somehow connected with a pouch or valve that may be
sticking, preventing the re-roll function to begin. I have opened up
and cleaned the re-roll valve box and the attached pneumatics seem to
be fine. I know there are a couple of cut out blocks and a universal
vent block connected to this function, but am reluctant to tear into
these without a little more understanding about what might be causing
the malfunction.

I have searched the MMD Archives but can't find anything related to
this type of problem. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

P.S. Last week I posted a listing of 52 piano rolls for sale and
I am happy to report they are all going to a new home in Wisconsin.
Thanks to the many of you who responded to the post.
