Eucalyptus camaldulensis is not native to the United States.  It has
been only fairly recently that this species has been introduced here.
The lumber is widely available these days due to the global economy and
the fact that it is a very common plantation wood.  However, the "red
gum" of 100 years ago most certainly did not refer to an imported wood
from Australia but rather the heart wood of the sweetgum tree that
grows all over the southern United States.
