Clarence Jacobs, Pianist & Rolla Artis Rolls
By John Phillips

Hello MMD. About a year ago I posted a query here about
a roll I had just acquired from eBay [080601 MMDigest]. It was
a Wurlitzer Rolla Artis roll No. 63, of "Etude Caprice" by C. V.
Alkan, and was played by Clarence Jacobs. No opus number was on
the label and I wanted to make sure the piece really was by Alkan.

A good deal of web site searching and people pestering yielded
nothing until I contacted the British pianist, Jack Gibbons. He
recognised it as Alkan Andantes Romantiques, Op.13, No. 2,
published 1837. Mr. Gibbons also pointed out that Alkan used the
same melody in his Concerto da camera No. 3 (Naxos 8.553702).

So now that mystery is solved, but Mr. Gibbons is interested in
when this roll may have been recorded. The only information about
Clarence Jacobs that I have is from the Billings Rollography where
he is listed as having recorded two rolls for QRS in 1917.

Does anybody know when Wurlitzer was producing Rolla Artis rolls,
or anything about Clarence Jacobs?
