Piano Roll Production Using Desktop Vinyl Cutter
By Randy Charles

About two years ago I experimented with using a vinyl cutter to
produce rolls for my Wurlitzer 105. I found a program to convert the
*.prt file from Midiboek to a DXF file, and then I converted the DXF
to a vector in my CAD program. It does work; I could produce printed
out rolls using the pen inserted where the cutting knife is normally.

However, I did not have any success cutting the paper as the knife
would tear or not cut the holes completely. I used several types of
paper and still had the same problems. Perhaps you might try and
design a roller cutter to insert in the machine, but I am not sure you
could make one small enough to work.

I also see another possible problem in that with a cutter which is
basically a pen plotter, the longer the paper the more possibility
there is for it to walk or skew. I finally abandoned this idea and
went with the CNC puncher.

Hope this helps,
Randy Charles
