Welte Orchestrions at Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor
By S. Lee Walker

Hi to all restorers! I was in Columbus, Indiana, (home of Cummins
engines) today attending a street fair where I saw a completely
restored ice cream store that was built in 1900 -- Zaharakos since
1900! The grand re-opening was June 6, 2009.

They have two orchestrions by M. Welte & Söhne, one restored by
Durward Center, Baltimore, Maryland, the other by Hayes McClaran of
Batesville, Indiana. These instruments look as if they came right
out of the factory. The craftsmanship is excellent.

See their web page at http://www.Zaharakos.com/ and click on "Music"
and you read the story about the restoring. In the larger instrument
they played Scott Joplin music. You could not believe the amount of
people listening and watching the instruments play. Who said player
pianos are dead?!
