Puzzling Stroud Duo-Art on eBay
By Dick Merchant

I looked at the photos on the eBay page, and they just raised more
curiosity. If you didn't notice, the player has shifting tracker bar
tracking instead of the usual shifting roll. This is the first time
I've ever seen it on a Duo-Art upright. I had thought that type
tracking was only used on some Duo-Art grands in the very late 1920's.

The Stroud's shifting-tracker-bar tracking is laid out exactly like the
one on my 1928 Weber Grand, including the tracker ears protruding
through slots in the tracker bar. There was no serial number given to
determine the instrument's age. So we're looking at a piano with a
shifting tracker bar, which I've always associated with late-model Duo-
Arts, and a Metrostyle pointer, which I've always associated with the
early Duo-Arts. All very puzzling.
