Transcribing a Piano Roll to Sheet Music
By Vincent Morgan

I have a request asking how to transcribe a piano roll to sheet
music (manuscript) without having to play the roll at a player piano.
The roll of interest is the spiritual, "Nearer My God To Thee," as
transcribed and performed by the pianist, Blind Boone, published on
88-note QRS Autograph Hand-Played Piano Roll, catalogue no. 400048.

The requestor writes, "The transcription was never notated by Boone,
but I'm hoping someone else may have notated it from the piano roll,
or can show me how to do this without playing the roll. (I've heard
there is a way of doing this by using some kind of grid over the paper
itself)."

The person who is asking does not have a player piano or access to one
for the length of time that it would take to transcribe the music to a
printed copy of the score so that people can actually play it. If you
can help or give advice please contact me at my email address below.
