The action let-off buttons in my 1917 Steinway Duo-Art upright
action seem to be set up to play correctly with a generous 7/16-inch
key dip, but when I reduce the dip distance to .400 inch, the distance
recommended for Steinway uprights in Floyd Stevens' "Piano Repair and
Rebuilding" book, the let-off buttons do not flip the jack out in time
to get the 1/8-inch let-off before the hammer hits the strings.

I am wondering if possibly early Steinways had a more generous dip or
whether a tuner may have set up the piano this way in the past.  I know
that this is almost a hair-splitting question but I want to get the
piano action set up correctly before I adjust the player action to the
piano.
