It is not always necessary to chose piano key frame shift or hammer lift.
If you're really interested, I outlined the combination of the two,
with diagrams, etc., last year in the AMICA Bulletin.

The results, when shift is activated per coding on the roll placed as
there by Aeolian but only on the softest accompaniment levels, are most
pleasant.  I have it set up this way on both my Steinways (9'6" and
7'6").  The results are equally sweet on classics and pops.
