Hupfeld Clavitist at Colorado Auction
By Philip Jamison

I inquired about the Hupfeld orchestrion at the Colorado auction.
The auctioneer kindly sent some photos, and I talked to the owner
as well. I believe it is a Clavitist, which is Hupfeld's early
coin piano and orchestrion system. The rolls are cut to play an
11-note xylophone and basic percussion (bass and snare drums).

Some Clavitists had orchestra bells, and a few had pipes, I believe.
The orchestrion at the sale is apart and in numerous boxes. The
photos of the various parts showed a xylophone plus bass and snare
drums. I saw no other instruments in the photos, but there may be
some pipes in there somewhere!
